Keynote Speakers
This year we are thrilled to welcome two exceptional keynote speakers to our conference
Dr. Shelia Tobias and Dr. Richard Alley.

Dr. Tobias has made an art and science of providing an outsider’s perspective to Science and Mathematics education and has authored many books covering topics in education including the well know They're not Dumb, They're Different.  Supported by the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Research Corporation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, her work has made her a sought-after consultant on college and university curricula, general education, post-baccalaureate alternatives, professional master's in science and mathematics, and women's studies. She will be discussing her latest effort Science Teaching as a Profession, which tracks the effect of high-stakes testing, values added management, threats to teacher tenure, and an erosion of teachers' autonomy and control.

Dr. Alley, from The Pennsylvania State University, is highly recognized as a leader in his scientific investigations of the earth’s cryosphere and global climate change.  He has been instrumental in providing expert testimony to the U.S. government on climate change as well as to numerous television documentaries and interviews.  In addition, he has been an outspoken advocate for science education on NPR Science Friday and he authored the book  The two-mile time machine: ice cores, abrupt climate change, and our future. He is well known for presentations that are informative, thought provoking, witty and amusing.   Dr. Alley will discuss the essential need for well trained and educated scientist to formulate new ideas and inventions to address climate change, the barriers we face in getting there (with stories from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and discussions with government officials) as well as possible ways to move forward.

ASTE Mentoring Program
If this is your first year attending the ASTE conference, we invite you to participate in the Mentor Program.  The program is designed to provide you access to a mentor who can answer your questions, help orient you to the conference and organization, and assist you in meeting other scholars who have similar interests.  As a mentee, you are invited to attend a special meet-and-greet session on the first day of the conference.

To participate in the mentor program, please check the appropriate box on the registration form. Contact Dr. Deborah Tippins at dtippins@uga.edu with questions.
