Title: NOS Left Behind (Abstract)
Given by: Norman G. Lederman, PhD
Bio: Dr. Norman G. Lederman is Chair and Professor of Mathematics and Science Education at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Lederman received his Ph.D. in Science Education and he possesses MS degrees in both Biology and Secondary Education. Prior to his 20 + years in science teacher education, Dr. Lederman was a high school teacher of biology and chemistry for 10 years. Dr. Lederman is internationally known for his research and scholarship on the development of students' and teachers' conceptions of nature of science and scientific inquiry. He has written or edited 10 books, 15 book chapters, over 200 articles, and made over 500 presentations on these topics.

Dr. Lederman is a former President of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) and the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science (AETS). He has also served as Director of Teacher Education for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). He has received the Illinois Outstanding Biology from the National Association of Biology Teachers and the Outstanding Mentor Award from AETS. Most recently, he has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Educational Research Association, and has received the Distinguished Career Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching.

Title: From Laughing Gulls and Dolphins to Meteorites: Stable Isotopes As a Tool for Science and Decision Making
Given by: Stephen A. Macko, PhD
Bio: Stephen A. Macko is a Professor of Isotope and Organic Geochemistry in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia. His education includes earning a B.S. in Chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon University, an MS in Oceanography from the University of Maine, and the PhD from the University of Texas in Chemistry. Dr. Macko’s research interests are varied, ranging from marine organic geochemistry with special applications to climate change to exploring the Origins of Life through the geochemistry of meteorites. He is active, as well, in K-12 education and outreach.

Dr. Macko’s work has been featured on Discovery and National Geographic television channel programs (The Ultimate Guide to Mummies, The Moche Murder Mystery, The Mummy Road Show). He has participated in numerous oceanographic expeditions, including dives to depths of over 500m in the submersible Johnson Sea Link. Additionally, Dr. Macko served as a research scientist on the high Arctic Canadian Ice Island. The author of more than 250 refereed research papers and books, Dr. Macko was elected a Fellow of the Geochemical Society and of the European Association of Geochemistry in 2003.

Proposals were due by July 4th, 2011 and acceptance letters were emailed to the first authors on Sept. 4, 2011.  If you did not receive a disposition email or have edits to the short abstract, title, or author contact information, please contact Bob Hollon at executivedirector@theaste.org before September 15th. Please note that request for changes to the proposal must come from the first author.

Science Teacher Shuffle
Application form
The Science Teacher Shuffle is a great way to start off the conference!  We’ll meet in the conference hotel lobby on Thursday at 6:45 AM to kick off the conference on the “right foot!”.  Join us for a 3 mile fun run or a 2 mile walk.  The park paths near the hotel are excellent and there is no better way to start the day than with a little exercise in a non-threatening atmosphere with terrific company!  The race is free!  So all you need do is complete the application form  and email, fax or snail mail it to:
