ASSISTANT PROFESSOR of SCIENCE EDUCATION

The Center for Science Teaching and Learning invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Science Education for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Responsibilities include teaching science education courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels; research in science education; supervision of student teachers; working with science educators in local schools; and service. The salary is $53,000 to $54,500 depending on experience and qualifications

Successful candidates must have:

  • an earned doctorate degree in science education OR a doctorate degree in a science field with training or experience in science education.  Degree must be completed by August 1, 2012.
  • at least one year of science teaching experience as the instructor of record in grades 6-12.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • substantial evidence of high quality teaching
  • a demonstrated potential for a productive research program
  • strong science preparation, particularly in the biological sciences
  • a demonstrated interest/ability to contribute to the center’s science education programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • experience in teacher professional development that can contribute to the center’s science education and research program.
  • three of more years experience in teaching at the 6-12 grade levels
  • experience integrating educational technology within science curriculum and instruction and/or teaching and developing on-line courses
  • experience in teaching and developing pedagogical courses for combined science and mathematics pre-service teachers
  • demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining collaborative school partnerships
  • a commitment to support the multicultural needs of Northern Arizona University and the surrounding area

The Center for Science Teaching and Learning (CSTL) is a teaching, research, evaluation, professional development and materials resource for science faculty and students across the NAU campus, as well as for Arizona K-20 sciences teachers and informal educators.  The CSTL is dedicated to engaging educators in the quest for excellence, access, and equity in science teaching and learning.  The CSTL provides leadership in and coordination of science and mathematics teacher certification, academic and professional development programs for science teachers, and outreach activities.  As the home of the NAUTeach Program, the CSTL is responsible for the recruitment, advising, and student teaching placement and supervision for secondary science and mathematics pre-service teachers.
