ASTE 2026 Elections Nominations Now Open

Dear ASTE members,

Nominations for this year’s elections are being accepted now through March 15, 2026. The ASTE Elections Committee would like to announce the call for nominations for the following elected positions that will be on the 2026 ballot (number of available positions in parentheses):

President-Elect (1)
At-Large Board Members (2)
- NOTE: All At-Large Board Members are appointed to serve as chair/co-chair of an ASTE Committee. Upcoming vacancies include: Publications Committee Co-Chair and Conference Planning Committee Chair.

Graduate Student Board Member (1)
- Note: This individual will co-Chair the Membership & Participation Committee

The following information should be submitted while logged in through the ASTE website under the “Member Resources” dropdown menu (>> Elections & Nominations >> 2026 Nomination Form) and include the following information in the 2026 nomination form:

Name of nominee
Position for which the person is being nominated
Nominee email address

All nominees will be notified via email asking to accept or decline the nomination. If the nomination is accepted, the nominee will need to submit their materials by the April 1, 2026 deadline. These materials will be evaluated using the Elections Committee Rubric found on the ASTE website on the Elections committee page here.

ASTE Communication Platform Change

ASTE will be discontinuing the use of MailChimp for association communications on March 15, 2026. ASTE will transition to using WildApricot as the primary method of communication and will use that platform exclusively after March 15. During the transition period, you may receive duplicate messages from both MailChimp and WildApricot.

Messages through MailChimp are sent to around 1200 contacts that are, or were, ASTE members at one time. Messages sent through WildApricot are sent to around 550 contacts who are or were members since 2025 (when the ASTE website switched over to the WildApricot website and membership platform).

If you no longer receive email messages from ASTE after March 15, 2026 you will need to join or renew your ASTE membership at https://theaste.org/join-us Note that ASTE membership rates increase on March 15, 2026 as well.

We present an open access curated collection showcasing the Leadership Matters column across the National Science Teaching Association’s three peer-reviewed journals: Science & Children, Science Scope, and The Science Teacher. Originally centered on elementary education, the column has expanded to include middle and high school perspectives, creating broader opportunities for educators to share leadership insights. This collection highlights how leadership influences science education through policy, practice, equity, professional learning, curriculum, and transformation across PK–12 settings. Contributors reflect diverse roles and both formal and informal leadership experiences. Rolling submissions are accepted, and column editors welcome inquiries.

ASTE Conference Program Coordinator Position Announcement

Conference Program Coordinator(s)
for the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE)

The Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE) is seeking applications for Conference Program Coordinator (s). The duration of the appointment is 3.5 years. The first six months (July 2026 –January 2027) will overlap with the current Conference Program Coordinator as a transition and training period. Official coordination responsibilities will be from closure of the 2027 ASTE Annual Conference through close of the 2030 ASTE Annual Conference.

The coordinator(s) will carry out their work as part of the ASTE Conference Planning Committee (CPC) to ensure that meetings, workshops, offsite events and field trips are included in the conference program. The CPC members include:

In preparation for the ASTE Annual Conferences, the Conference Program
Coordinator(s):

Manage the process for building the daily conference schedule, including concurrent sessions, meetings, and other events
Coordinates the process of assembling the information from all parties necessary to build the conference program and conference app.
Collaborates with CPC Chair and other members of the committee

Most of the coordinator’s work is completed remotely, with the busiest period
between July and November each year as proposals are submitted and reviewed.

The Conference Program Coordinator(s) must be members in good standing of ASTE. Desired qualifications include a high level of organization, strong interpersonal skills for collaboration, attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and familiarity working with spreadsheets. The position includes a stipend of $1800.00, complimentary registration, and up to 4 complementary nights at the conference hotel during the annual conferences during the term of service (2028, 2029, 2030).

Are you a graduate student or a new faculty member hoping to get more involved and connected in the ASTE community?

Whomever you may be, the ASTE mentor/mentee Nexus is for you and is currently open for sign-ups for the upcoming 2026 international conference in Chicago, Illinois!

Still on the fence? Current Graduate Student Forum President Jeff Papa had this to say about how his experience as a mentee shaped his involvement with ASTE and future career goals.

“My participation as a mentee was a transformative experience that positively influenced my role as a student, scholar, and member of the ASTE community. Through my time at the ASTE conferences, I have been able to grow my network of friends and colleagues. I owe much of my experience to the incredible people of the mentor/mentee nexus.”

The deadline for signing up is Friday, November 28th. After the deadline, we will match participants who have signed up and send an email to inform you of your match and provide details about mentor-mentee events at ASTE ‘26. ASTE 2026 Mentor & Mentee Registration - 2026 Conference

Hello ASTE Friends!

It's time to sign up to be a mentor or a mentee at ASTE ‘26. There is a continued need for mentors and mentees as we grow our ASTE community at the conference. Last year, we had a nice showing (over 60 people involved; approximately 35 pairs), and we would like to continue that trend. If you've attended an ASTE conference before and are willing to share your experiences with ASTE and their expertise, sign up to mentor. If you feel you could use someone to ask questions of and get a little guidance from, please don't hesitate to sign up as a mentee. The links to sign up are provided below, along with the mentor-mentee obligations. When you fill out the mentor or mentee form, you will share information about your research interests and areas within which you would like guidance (mentee) or that you can provide mentorship (mentor). This information will help us match mentors with mentees.

NARST/ASTE Sponsored Session

Dear ASTE Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit proposals for the ASTE Sponsored Session at the upcoming 99th NARST Annual International Conference, titled “Joyful Transgressions and Radical Imagination in Science Education”, which will be held in-person April 19–22, 2026 (with a virtual pre-conference day on April 9) in Seattle, Washington.

This session, co-sponsored by ASTE and NARST, invites visionary contributions that bridge theory and practice to reimagine science literacy in ways that advance justice and support all learners, reflecting NARST’s core mission.

Please consider revising your ASTE conference proposals by incorporating new examples or updated data, refining your research questions or arguments, adding brief literature updates, clarifying key concepts, or improving clarity and focus to ensure your proposal offers a distinct and meaningful contribution.

Important Update: ASTE Membership Cycle Change Starting August 1, 2025

We’re writing to share an important update to how ASTE manages its membership cycle—designed to simplify the process and better align with conference registration timelines and ASTE’s new suite of electronic services.

What’s Changing?
Beginning August 1, 2025, ASTE will shift to a rolling membership model. This means your membership will be valid for one full year from the exact date you join or renew—rather than following the traditional calendar-year cycle (January 1–December 31).

Why This Matters:
This change helps eliminate past confusion tied to conference registration. In previous years, members had to hold active membership for the calendar year of the annual conference to access the discounted member registration rate. With our new rolling model:

Anyone with an active membership at the time of registering for the conference will receive the member rate—regardless of when they joined.
For example:
- If you join ASTE on October 1, 2025, you’ll have access to the members-only registration rates for the 2026 conference once they are made available through the ‘Member Resources’ dropdown menu on the new ASTE website.
- If you join on January 3, 2026, you’ll also get access to the discounted member rate through the same mechanism.

Plus, no more guessing about renewal dates!
Our new membership management system will send out automatic reminders to renew your membership based on your individual join date—so you won’t be caught off guard when it’s time to renew.

That said, please note that it is now each member’s responsibility to ensure their ASTE membership is active at the time they register for the annual conference in order to receive the discounted member rate for the upcoming conference.

We hope this update supports a more flexible, user-friendly experience for both new and returning members.

Update on Website & Membership Database Transition

Dear ASTE Members,

We're excited to share an important update about our website and membership management system.

As part of our broader electronic transition, users who visit www.theaste.org will automatically be redirected to our new website and membership management platform, now provided by WildApricot. The new system offers enhanced functionality, improved navigation, and a more user-friendly experience for managing your membership and accessing ASTE resources.

Membership and Profile Information:
If you are a 2025 ASTE member in the current system, you will be able to access the new member portal with your membership and profile information already transferred. To login you need to use the same email address as used in the original ASTE site. Once logged in, you will also have the opportunity to reset your password, review your information and customize your privacy settings according to your preferences.

Login Instructions:
If it is your first time accessing the new member portal, you may need to reset your password. Please click "Forgot Password" on the login page to establish your credentials within the updated system.

Important Membership Information:
If you are not a 2025 member in the current system and want to become a member, you will need to register as a new member for the 2025 membership year through the new platform.

New Feature – ASTE Job Board:
The new ASTE website features an online Job Board, where current members (at no cost) and non-members (i.e., fees will apply) can easily submit job openings and view current opportunities in the field. Members will also have the option to subscribe to job board updates directly on the site, making it even easier to stay informed about new position announcements.

Additional Reminders:

The redirection from theaste.org will occur automatically — no action is needed on your part to find the new site.
Members will receive personalized email communications through the new system to manage membership renewals as we approach the end of the membership year. These communications will be sent 90 days before the renewal date (early October), 30 days before the renewal date (early December), and on the actual renewal date (January 1). If not renewed within 7 days, member status will be changed to lapsed.

Graduate Assistant to ASTE Executive Director Position

Graduate Assistant to the ASTE Executive Director 2025-2027

We are currently in the process of accepting applications for the position of Graduate Assistant to the Executive Director for the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE). The successful candidate will assume responsibilities on August 15, 2025, and serve a two-year term with continuation based on positive 6-month performance reviews. The work is largely remote excluding the annual ASTE conference.

Individuals currently enrolled in a public or private graduate school program related to science education are encouraged to apply. Support is provided by ASTE for the position including a $1000 yearly stipend, complimentary membership to ASTE, and complimentary registration to the annual ASTE international conference. The graduate assistant shall attend the annual conference to assist the Executive Director. ASTE shall budget $2000 to cover these expenses.

Requirements:

Ability to interact with ASTE leaders and members in a professional manner
Ability to maintain confidentiality for all ASTE work related to the position
Ability to work in an online environment
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, often with tight timelines
Proficiency in Google Forms, Microsoft Office including Excel, and merging PDF files
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Meetings with Executive Director and/or Director of Electronic services once every two weeks
Strong institutional/advisor support for this position
Preference given to those with at least one year remaining in a graduate program in science education or related field
Preference given to candidates with ASTE familiarity/experience
Access to stable internet connection

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Manage, format, and update ASTE leadership spreadsheets
Oversee the production of award certificates and plaques
Edit and update SOPs after each board meeting, 4 times per year
Solicit and compile agenda items for board meetings
Organize and manage board meeting travel planning
Manage, print, and file conference name badges
Station the ASTE office at conferences when the ED is in board meetings
Manage the creation of the annual conference luncheon PowerPoint presentation
Create and manage google forms for scheduling and organizing meetings
Assist in liaising with conference hotel staff to support conference activities
Attend and support graduate student functions at the annual conference

It is estimated that the assistant will spend about 16-25 working hours per month, with more hours during conference and board meeting periods and less at other times. Except for responsibilities during the conference, which is in-person, all other activities will be performed virtually.

Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education

The Publications Committee of the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE) is seeking applications for Editor or Co-Editors for the Science Education section of the online journal, Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE). The duration of appointment is three years, beginning in January 2026, plus a half-year overlap with the current editors from July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. The new editor(s) will assume full editing responsibilities of the Science Education Section from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028.

The CITE Journal is an online, peer-reviewed journal, established and jointly sponsored by five professional associations (ASTE, AMTE, NCSS, CEE, and SITE). This is the only joint venture of this kind in the field of teacher education. Each professional association has sole responsibility for editorial review of articles in its discipline. The online journal format allows authors to demonstrate the technologies about which they are writing, including video and audio segments, animation, virtual reality, Web links, and simulations. The current issue of the journal may be accessed at http://www.citejournal.org.

The CITE Science Education Section Editor must be a member in good standing of ASTE. This individual should have research expertise in science teacher education and applications of technology as well as experience in publishing and reviewing manuscripts for refereed professional educational journals. In addition, the editor will be expected to attend annual ASTE meetings and serve as an ex-officio member of the ASTE Publications Committee. Both U.S. and International members of ASTE are encouraged to apply.

CITE holds an annual editors meeting in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Information Technology and Teachers Education (http://site.aace.org/). Attendance is strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities for a CITE Science Education Section Editor include:

Maintaining academic standards that are comparable to those of the Journal for Science Teacher Education.
Soliciting manuscripts for the CITE Science Education Section.
Assigning each manuscript submission a minimum of two review board members.
Making a decision on the manuscript based on reviewers’ comments and the disposition of the manuscript with respect to the purpose of the CITE journal, and communicating the decision with authors.
Identifying one to two articles for the Science Education Section in each issue of the CITE journal (Note: published quarterly, so four to eight articles per year).
Originating the call for and the selection of Editorial Review Board (ERB) members yearly.
Providing the ASTE publication committee the application materials for those applying to be ERB members, as well as a recommendation for whom to accept as an ERB member. The ASTE publication committee reviews the applications and provides a recommendation to the ASTE Board of Directors for approval.
Ensuring that reviewers are thanked publicly on an annual basis.
Maintaining communication between CITE and ASTE.
Maintaining correspondence with CITE reviewers (including annual thank-you letters).
Communicating regularly with the ASTE Newsletter editor(s) to promote the CITE Journal with the ASTE membership.
Compiling statistics and maintaining files as appropriate for the Science Education Section.
Working with the ASTE Publications Committee and Editors of other ASTE related publications to coordinate a "Publishing in Science Education" or “Publishing in ASTE journals” session at the annual ASTE conference.
Submitting semi-annual Board reports to ASTE through the Publications Committee.
Interacting regularly with CITE general Editors.
Attending quarterly editors’ meetings via conference call from CITE.
Participating annually in the NTLI technology award selection process.

Support for this position includes:

Complimentary registration to attend the annual SITE conference provided by the Society for Informational Technology and Teacher Education (SITE).
Complimentary membership in ASTE for each year of full editorial responsibilities.
A yearly stipend of $800 from ASTE.

2026 ASTE International Conference

Join us in Chicago, IL for the 2026 ASTE International Conference!

The conference will be located at Swissotel Chicago, an award-winning luxury hotel overlooking Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, and just steps from the Magnificent Mile.

Proposals should address research and innovations in science teacher education. Information about formats, threads, proposal requirements, and rubrics for proposals can be found at our new website.

To receive full consideration, proposals must have been submitted, and any edits must be completed by midnight, Pacific Daylight Time, the night of July 10, 2025. Any proposal submitted after that date will only be considered if space and time permit.

In addition to submitting a proposal, please consider taking on the role(s) of reviewer and/or presider for the conference. To serve in one of these roles, fill out the volunteer application here to serve in one of these roles.
