Fearless Science Education

2025 International Conference

Join us in Long Beach, CA, USA on January 15-18, 2025

Conference Theme: Fearless Science Education

In our current political environment, where science is often subject to skepticism and politicization, it’s crucial for educators to embody fearlessness in their approach to the topic. Fearlessness in teaching science entails a steadfast commitment to evidence-based knowledge and transparent inquiry. The prevalence of misinformation, pseudoscience, and skepticism about scientific findings means educators must empower students to think critically, and evaluate evidence in light of scientific knowledge. Politics pressures our teachers to ignore (or worse, deny) their students’ identities, remove books from their classrooms, and treat “DEI” like a dirty word. It’s through fearless teaching that we can set an example and inspire a new generation of scientifically literate individuals who are equipped to tackle the challenges of the future with clarity, curiosity, and confidence. This conference will focus on our work together as science teacher educators to support our teachers and give them the tools to face these challenges without fear and equip students with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Join Us!

The Far West ASTE region and conference planning committee invite you to join us in Long Beach, California at the Westin in downtown Long Beach in January 2025! Pre-conference adventures begin on Wednesday, January 15th and conclude with the ASTE awards and business luncheon on Saturday, January 18th.

Here are some reasons to join us in Long Beach:

  • Fabulous field trips: Attendees can register for pre- and post-conference field trips including a behind-the-scenes STEM tour of Disneyland, a whale-watching excursion narrated by a biologist, and an experience learning about the science of brewing beer. But you’ll need to register quickly as these are sure to fill up fast
  • Lots to do nearby: The Westin in downtown Long Beach is in walking distance from the beach and the Aquarium of the Pacific. While you’re here you can rent kayaks and stand up paddle (SUP) boards to explore Naples Island canals, rent a bike or walk along the beach boardwalks, visit the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) or the Long Beach Museum of Art, walk along the pedestrian promenade with its shops and restaurants, take the ferry/catamaran to Catalina Island, or visit the famous Queen Mary to tour its engine rooms, restaurants, bars and museum, – and so much more!
  •  Delicious food: There are lots of delicious restaurants nearby so come hungry, walk to the Pike, Pine Avenue and the Promenade.
  •  Sunny weather: The weather in Southern California should be sunny (with an occasional rain shower) and mild so you can leave your parka at home.
  • Stimulating conversations: Of course we’re there to learn too.  Reconnect with our science teacher education community to share and build knowledge together!

Looking forward to seeing you in Sunny Southern California!
